Tuning into Teens - emotion coaching skills for parents

Do you find it hard to get your teen to listen to you? Is their behaviour worrying you? Do they seem emotional or moody? Parenting teens can be tough.  Hormonal changes can cause intense emotions and rapid mood shifts and teenagers are exploring their identity and experimenting to try and find the right fit.  It can be a risky time, with teens’ desire for exploration sometimes leading to risk taking, experimenting with drugs or unsafe sexual activity.

Tuning in to Teens™ is a six-session program that provides parents of teens aged 11-18 years with a greater understanding of their teen’s emotional experiences while teaching specific skills that can help in being supportive, empathic and staying connected with your teen. It can help parents move from the role of ‘manager’ for their child (planning and organising everything for them), to ‘consultant’ (a person your child can trust, who provides solid advice and guidance, but who also supports their growing independence).

Tuning in to Teens shows you how to help your teen develop emotional intelligence which helps them make good decisions. Research shows that adolescents with higher emotional intelligence:

  • are more aware, assertive and strong in situations of peer pressure

  • have greater success with making friends and are more able to manage conflict with peers

  • are more able to cope when upset or angry

  • have fewer mental health and substance abuse difficulties

  • have more stable and satisfying relationships as adults

  • have greater career success - emotional intelligence may be a better predictor of academic and career success than IQ.

The program runs for 2 hours per week over six weeks. Cost is $410 for the program. The next program will be run remotely on Wednesday nights 7.30-9.30pm from 12 August 2020running for 6 weeks. Register your interest for the next group below or contact our reception.
